Shanghai to gain 29GW of offshore energy

23 Jul by James Walker

News indicates that a model for offshore wind development is being trialled in China that could see cities have their own respective installations – that is, if the example being set by Shanghai, China’s largest city, is followed elsewhere. A plan to feed the 29.3 GW installation into the city’s grid has been developed by the Shanghai Municipal Development and Reform Commission and approved by China’s central government. Generating 100 TWh of green energy per year, such an installation could power around half of the city, and would contribute to national climate objectives while also bolstering China’s global position at the top of installed offshore wind capacity, a position it has held for six years consecutively now.
