11 million UK homes to be powered by renewable energy

A 1.5billion pound auction will support 131 new renewable energy projects (including wind farms) in the UK, increasing (by sevenfold) the amount made available last year. This record supplier funding proposed by the government is expected to bring a significant uptick in investment and the creation of new jobs, with a guaranteed price for units of clean electricity, paid for by energy bills. In addition to the 11 million homes expected to be powered by this investment, this marks part of a plan to provide greater energy security to families around the country, and take us closer to clean energy goals for 2030. Energy minister Ed Milliband remarked that the UK has also secured the largest floating offshore wind project in the world – the bulk of the investment will go to offshore wind, with the hope of increasing the UK’s offshore wind capacity by 5 GW.
